Polysomnography (PSG): Indications, Technique & Sleep Scoring

چکیده
Electroencephalographic (EEG) activity in wakefulness and in sleep in humans was initially described in 1928. The earliest overnight sleep studies were performed in the 1930s using a polygraph to record EEG activity and electro-oculograms (EOG) on paper. Major milestones in the history of sleep medicine include the identification of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep in 1953, the description of normal sleep cycles in 1957 dividing sleep into non-REM and REM periods, and the recording of muscle atonia in REM sleep.

73 EEG Electrode Placement in Polysomnography—Ruehland et al IN CLINICAL PRACTICE THE MOST COMMON INDICATIONS FOR POLYSOMNOGRAPHY (PSG) ARE INVESTIGATION AND TREATMENT OF OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP apnea (OSA). For OSA diagnosis the main outcome measures from PSG are: (1) the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), which is a measure of sleep disordered breathing events (apneas and hypopneas) per hour of sleep, (2)...

1451 Polysomnography and Related Procedures in Children—Kotagal et al 1.0 INTRODUCTION In the last three decades, the knowledge and practice of pediatric sleep medicine has grown dramatically, as reflected in the exponential growth of peer reviewed publications regarding pediatric polysomnography (PSG). Comprehensive, attended, in-laboratory (level I) PSG is most often conducted to evaluate and...
متن کاملBeyond standard polysomnography: Advantages and indications for use of extended 10–20 EEG montage during laboratory sleep study evaluations
PURPOSE Standard polysomnography (PSG) typically utilizes 4-6 channels of electroencephalography (EEG), which is inadequate to evaluate focal epileptiform activity. Though technical capability has long existed for more extensive EEG recording, few sleep laboratories have utilized this technique. The objective of this study was to determine the utility of combining PSG with 18-channel EEG in sel...
متن کاملDiscrepancy in polysomnography scoring for a patient with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome.
Overnight polysomnography (PSG) is indispensable for diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome. However, studies on interscorer agreement on PSG scoring between laboratories are few. The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability of interscorer agreement on PSG scoring among 16 sleep laboratories in Japan. We found a relatively moderate interscorer reliability of the inde...
متن کاملScreening obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome by home videotape recording in children.
Overnight polysomnography (PSG) has been used to diagnose and assess the severity of obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) in children. The aim of this study was to determine whether home video-recording of children during sleep may be used for screening OSAS. In 58 children suspected of having OSAS, PSG results were compared with the corresponding analyses of 30 min video-recordings of each...
